About this event
Welcome to Trackmasters' Open Track Event on VIR’s Full Course, June 18 -19.
Trackmasters has been hosting track days for over 30 years. Our unique Open Track format caters exclusively to advanced drivers, and we have built a loyal following of professionals, semi-professionals, club racers and Advanced DE track veterans. This year we are bringing Trackmasters Open Track to VIR for the first time!

Experience Required for Open Track
Our Open Track is for drivers at the top levels of high-performance driving, including:
- professional and amateur racers;
- certified DE instructors; and
- extremely experienced DE drivers.
Once the track goes green in the morning, Open Track drivers can look forward to an entire day of uninterrupted open lapping time.
Point-bys are still required for insurance, but Open Track drivers should have the situational awareness and predictability to give and receive point-bys anywhere on the track with enough time to allow overtaking cars to maintain their pace and momentum. Note the distinction: the emphasis is on a driver maintaining momentum. That’s what sets Trackmasters’ Open Track apart from other Advanced DE run groups. It takes years of driver skill and experience; it’s not enough just having a fast car that can turn a fast lap.
Managing the Speed Differentials in Open Track
Trackmasters’ Open Track attracts drivers from a wide range of vehicles and race classes. From prototypes and factory race cars to high-performance street cars and momentum track cars – we have it all.
Every driver wants the ability to get in as many clean laps as possible, and the speed differential can be frustrating to advanced drivers regardless of where they are on the speed spectrum. By limiting our Open Track participation to extremely experienced drivers, Trackmasters can introduce subtle changes in the passing timing expectations during the day to create a better on-track experience for drivers, regardless of where they are on the speed differential spectrum. We call it alternating between a Power Bias and Momentum Bias on track. We’ll explain more about how this works during the drivers meeting, but in a nutshell:
- Those of you in faster cars will rarely need to slow your pace when approaching a momentum car in turns during the Power Bias periods; and
- Those of you in lower power cars won’t have to break momentum just before turn-in during the Momentum Bias periods because of a high-powered car approaching from behind.
Qualification and Registration
To make it all work, we take Open Track qualification seriously to maintain the high-quality, on-track experience our long-time Open Track customers expect. Drivers new to Trackmasters can register for Open Track but may be contacted prior to the event to review previous experience. An Open Track checkout ride by one of our Advanced Coaches may also be required on event day. With this in mind, please make sure your driving history is current on MotorsportReg.com.
If you have any questions about being Open Track eligible, contact us before registering. If you think you have the skills and experience to join our Open Track community, we look forward to seeing you at VIR!
